Honoring Veterans at War Horse Brewing Co.
Each year, Americans honor our military veterans on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Created to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I, it's a day set aside to pay tribute to all men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. At War Horse Brewing Co. in Geneva, every day is a day to recognize those who served our country. The brewery's name and brand are an homage to owner Luanne Mansfield's father, who was a U.S. Navy veteran. Martin "Mike" Mihalov served four years in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. Today Big Mike's military legacy, and his love of local beer, live on at War Horse Brewing Co.
The walls at War Horse Brewing Co. are adorned with photos and memorabilia of those who fought for our freedom. The brewery's custom ales, lagers, seasonal beers, hard ciders and sodas are all crafted on site, and several have names and labels with a military flare. Lieutenant Dan IPA is their most popular beer, soft and hazy with notes of melon and candied grapefruit. Their fruity assortment of Bombshell hard ciders feature WWII-era pinup girls on the labels.
War Horse Brewing Co. poured its first pint in 2008, when the beer was contract brewed in Rochester. Eight years later, the dream of opening an on-site brewing facility became a reality.
The microbrewery shares its home with three unique wineries as part of Three Brothers Wineries and Estates, which overlooks beautiful Seneca Lake. There are several options that allow for tastings at War Horse Brewing Co. and its sister wineries. Walk-ins are welcome, but tasting reservations are recommended on weekends. And don't leave without grabbing a bite to eat at Iron Heart Cafe, where Chef Joe is always creating something delicious.
