The Seneca White Deer
Closed in 2000, the Seneca Army Depot is now recently reopened but for a much different purpose than acting as a United States munitions cache. The compound is now the home of the world’s largest herd of white deer. After decades of careful cultivation and hunting restrictions, the white deer population in Seneca is at an all-time high of 300. View the spectacular woodland creatures and plan your visit to Yale Manor today!
Seneca White Deer, Inc. has made the white-tailed white deer of Seneca a visitor and tourist destination. Nature enthusiasts, animal-lovers, conservationists, and environmentalists will be absolutely awestruck at the beautiful animals. It’s easy to understand why the Native Americans of the Finger Lakes once revered the white deer on a deep spiritual level. Today, we can understand the fascinating white deer with science and research; the recessive gene that causes lack of pigmentation in the deer’s hair (not to be mistaken for albinism) normally makes them easy targets for hunters and predators. It’s one of the reasons why the white white-tailed deer are so rare.
The controlled and protected herd at the Seneca Army Depot, though, has flourished for the past 70 years and has finally been made available to public tours. The 25-passenger heated tour bus allows a comfortable, 90-minute, narrated trip with a “behind-the-fences” look at the former Seneca Army Depot. Other than the white deer, the tour also visits one of the 519 concrete igloos once used to store anything from pistol cartridges to nuclear warheads. Any military history buff would also enjoy this tour and the glimpses into secret weapons storage during the Cold War era.
