Visit Sampson State Park
Located on the east shore of Seneca Lake, Yale Manor’s neighbor, Sampson State Park, was once one of America’s largest military training bases during World War II. Repurposed into a state park, Sampson became a stunning area of grasses, wildflowers, and woodlands on a rolling landscape that surrounds ravines. It’s one of the best spots in all the Finger Lakes for catching a breathtaking sunset so packing a picnic and waiting for the sun’s final moments makes for a perfect evening during your stay.
Sampson State Park is also a great location for taking a stroll. Within the park’s three square miles, Sampson boasts a 38-mile network of trails thanks to the roads left by the surplus basic training base that was sold to New York in 1960 for $500,000. While the 5.5 mile distance from Yale Manor is probably best driven, the proximity is perfect for last-minute evening walks that are guaranteed to impress you with the sunset views. Situated at the center of Seneca Lake’s east shore, the panoramic view across the water is unforgettable.
Besides the great views and endless trails, Sampson State Park includes a military museum run by volunteer Air Force and Navy veterans full of artifacts and displays of memorabilia that were around when the base was active.
