The Corning Museum of Glass
The Corning Museum of Glass is one of the Finger Lakes’ most interesting destinations. The extensive museum hosts a wing dedicated to 35 centuries of glass art and history, a floor dedicated to glass science and innovation, a design wing, and the largest space in the world focusing on hot glass demonstrations. There are dozens of reasons to visit Corning, so we’ve picked some of our favorite reasons to visit the Corning Museum of Glass.
Self-Guided Tours: Take a self-guided tour of the museum. Start in the Contemporary Art + Design Galleries and continue through to the Innovation Center to get an interactive look at new discoveries in glass. View 3,500 years of glass history and contemporary works from the last few decades. The tour includes demonstration of hot glassblowing all day.
The Glass in Automotive Design Exhibit: This exhibit will be on display from December 6th, 2018 to December 8th, 2019. Besides discussing the ingenuity of glass and its usefulness in our vehicles, the Corning Incorporated concept car parked on site demonstrates the design of automobiles when shaped around glass. The coolest thing? The tempered sunroof and back window are covered with a film containing nanoparticles; just use the touchpad menu on the car’s console to realign the nanoparticles and change the window’s tint.
Hot Glass Demos: The Hot Glass demonstrations at the museum are a must-see. The narrated tour will take you through the process and cameras inside the furnaces make sure you won’t miss a single step. Besides getting to see some of the best glassmakers in the world work at their profession and craft, the methods they’re using are ancient. Witness the same form of glassblowing that was known to be used by the Romans over 2,000 years ago.
The Corning Museum of Glass is open year-round, seven days a week. For more information and to plan your visit, click here.
