Waterfalls in the Finger Lakes
No matter where you find yourself during your adventure in the Finger Lakes with us, you’ll always be close to a waterfall. There are dozens of them scattered throughout the region and some parks, like Watkins Glen, have as many as twenty waterfalls connecting the network of streams, creeks, and rivers that feed the Finger Lakes. Some of our region’s cities have waterfalls downtown, like Rochester’s High Falls section, but most of our breathtaking falls can be found exploring the wooded glens, winding roads, and serene pathways all over the Finger Lakes.
About 40 minutes south of Yale Manor on Route 414 you’ll find Watkins Glen State Park, one of the region’s most popular attractions, famous for its 19 waterfalls and reputation for leaving visitors completely awestruck. In just two miles, the stream descends 400 feet and jumps 200-foot cliffs. The park’s Gorge Trail winds its way over, under, and through the waterfalls. In 2015, USA Today ranked Watkins Glen as the third best state park in the country. Visit the website for more information and a map of Watkins Glen.
Besides the breathtaking gorge of Watkins Glen, you won’t want to leave the Finger Lakes without laying eyes on Taughannock Falls. Taughannock is the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains, a spectacular 215-foot drop that is taller than Niagara! Taughannock Falls State Park also has an easy, level hiking trail for a relaxing stroll outside on your waterfall hunt. Find more information on Taughannock Falls State Park on the New York State website.
There are dozens more to visit that all have breathtaking views, pools of water to swim, or stone paths through a sheltered gorge. For a more complete list of all the waterfalls in the area, click here and plan your trip. You can also plan a driving tour if you are unable to hike.
