Visit Seneca's Most Historic Sites
This itinerary gives you some great ideas for a getaway that takes you to Seneca’s most historic sites, along its man-made waterways, and finally to its picturesque shoreline wineries. Stand at the site of one of America’s most historic events: the Seneca Fall’s Women’s Rights Convention. In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and four other women summoned a meeting, a simple discussion, that sought a serious discourse about the social, civil, and religious status of women in the United States. The attendees not only discussed the right to vote, they also sought the rights to equal education, property and earnings, and the custody of their children.
Visit the National Women’s Rights Museum in Seneca Falls to learn about the courageous women and men who fought for equality. Start at the Visitor Center, get yourself oriented by watching the film, and visit the Wesleyan Chapel, the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention. Other attractions include Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s home where you’ll learn how a housewife and mother of three came to be one of the most influential figureheads in American history. Guided walking tours take place on Sundays at 11AM and depart from the Visitor Center for a mile-long walk to the Stanton house. Admission is free.
Seneca Falls is also a great place to set sail on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Discover the history in the canal’s waters and how it spread the revolutionary ideas of women’s rights throughout America. Locks two and three of the canal are only a mile away from the Women’s Rights National Historical Park. Enjoy a picnic while basking in the sun along the canal or visit one of the local sailing charters to get glimpse at the outstanding views this September. To discover Cayuga-Seneca Canal boating options, visit the Finger Lakes website. Options include self-skippered boats, tour boats like Liberty Boat Tours, and charter boats with a captain and crew like Seneca Cruise Co. The 12-mile-long canal also provides a link to the Seneca Lake wine region. Visit Yale Manor’s winery attractions page here or combine the excitement of sailing with the fun of wine tasting with Schooner Excursions on the Winery, Brewery, and Distillery Tour of Seneca Lake.
