Maple Weekends in the New York Finger Lakes
March is a great month to visit the Finger Lakes, and it’s not because of the region’s usual claim-to-fame (the wine!) or the month’s most common attention-getter, March Madness. March in the Finger Lakes means maple syrup. Just behind Vermont, New York is the country’s second-highest producer of maple syrup, and most of that comes from the Finger Lakes. So, between sips of wine (you’re in the Finger Lakes, after all) and watching your favorite teams work their way to an NCAA championship this month, try something new and discover New York’s delicious, pure maple syrup. During the Maple Weekends, March 17-18 and 24-25, farms across New York State invite visitors to experience firsthand the mouthwatering maple syrup and related products that the sugarhouses create.
Day Brothers Dairy & Maple Farm in Phelps, only twenty minutes north of Yale Manor, is a sugar maker that’s been around since the 1880s. For New York’s Maple Weekends, the farm’s sap house is open and visitors can enjoy samples of maple syrup and cream. Activities include wagon rides into the woods to view the tubing and tank collection system as well as displays of tools and equipment that make it possible to extract the sap and eventually bring it into your kitchen as one of your favorite sugary treats. The small, family-owned operation also features free tours of ‘Ye Olde Sap House’ production facilities and the amazing display of sap collection by year. View how different the sap colors are from year-to-year with this historic, museum-like exhibit.
