Bald Eagle Watching in Upstate New York
Here in the Finger Lakes, we are surrounded by an unparalleled natural landscape that inspired Native Americans in myth and lore with the raw beauty of its hundreds of waterfalls, long, deep lakes, and abundant wildlife. It truly is New York’s own personal paradise as well as a popular refuge from the stress of busy, day-to-day, urban life. Reconnect with nature this spring with a visit to Yale Manor and the nearby Montezuma Audubon Center, located within one of the most active flight lanes in the Atlantic Flyway. From the mass migrations of birds to fishing, hiking, hunting, and just old fashioned, breathtaking views, Montezuma is guaranteed to renew your sense of well-being with some much-needed outdoor therapy. (Literally, studies show that walking in the woods improves everything from blood pressure to mental health and memory to cancer risk.)
The 12th Annual Montezuma Wildlife Festival brings the best of the Animal Kingdom together on Saturday, May 12th from 10AM-3PM. Enjoy owl and hawk shows, live music, food trucks serving burgers and desserts, guided canoe and birdwatching tours, and local artisanal and craft products. Nature enthusiasts flock to the Montezuma Wetlands Complex (along with millions of migratory birds) for a day that reveals the wonders of nature and the importance of its conservation. And don’t forget about the native plant sale!
At the Montezuma Audubon Center, you will find yourself at the main building of one of the East Coast’s birdwatching capitals. The gateway to the Montezuma Wetlands Complex and National Wildlife Refuge includes five different habitats, two restored freshwater marshes, two miles of hiking trails, and an all-access observation platform. Get up close and personal with owls, falcons, and hawks, or take a hike through the 10,000-acre expanse of North American wetlands. Within the National Wildlife Refuge’s borders, you’ll find over 240 species of birds including the majestic bald eagle year-round at the six active nests. You can also enjoy a wildlife photography trip on the Wildlife Drive route and try to capture a picture of bald eagles from your car. Or, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast seeking fresh air in the pristine reaches of the Finger Lakes, tackle the Seneca Hiking Trail.
Tickets are just $4 per adult for the Montezuma Wildlife Festival. Visit the website for more information and plan your visit to New York’s Finger Lakes region with a stay at Yale Manor today!
